The Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School has not operated classroom or residential programs on the campus in Vinton since 2011. In an effort to use our resources to provide the greatest benefit to the students we serve, the Board of Regents, State of Iowa is working to sell the property. On Saturday, January 28th blind and low vision youth in grades 1-12 from Iowa gathered at the Iowa Department for the Blind (IDB) in Des Moines to compete in the 2017 Iowa Regional Braille Challenge. On January 27-28, four wrestlers from Iowa traveled to Louisville, Kentucky in order to compete in a tournament sponsored by the North Central Association of Schools for the Blind. Buoyed by a team effort that resulted in all 4 wrestlers earning medals in their respective weight classes, the Iowa Rams battled their way to a 5 th place finish among the 11 teams competing. Winter Olympics A lack of snow didn't stop these Olympians from enjoying the great outdoors. Students not only trekked through nature, but got off the beaten path and wandered through a prairie with no trail. They tried their hand at bird identification, matching sounds which is how penguins keep track of their young, and made feeders for the wild birds that inhabit the Benton County Conservation area.
