Extended Learning Program

Iowa Educational Services for Blind and Visually Impaired offers extended learning opportunities to children who are blind or visually impaired. These programs are designed to address the unique learning needs that are included in the expanded core curriculum for children and youth who are eligible for vision services in Iowa. These learning opportunities are scheduled regionally throughout the calendar year.  Contact your Teacher of the Visually Impaired or Orientation & Mobility Specialist for information on events in your area.

The following programs are currently offered to all children and youth in Iowa who are receiving vision services.

During academic school year, August - May

  • Spring Family Conference and other events to facilitate the networking of families of children who are blind or visually impaired
  • Braille Challenge competition 
  • Regional Expanded Core Curriculum focus events
  • Competitive sports for students in grades 7-12 in swimming,track & field, wrestling, goal ball and forensics

During summer, June – July

  • A variety of residential and day camps are offered across the state.  A complete listing of camps are available each spring.
