Camp Explore - Easter Seals Camp Sunnyside 2018

by Sheri Wren

July 8 – 13, 2018

Nineteen campers enjoyed a great week during Camp Explore at Camp Sunnyside! The heat did not keep us from being active and making new friends. Horseback riding, archery, paddle boating and pontoon boating on Lake Cheerio,  rock wall climbing, and fishing were some of the highlights of the week.  In our down-time, campers rested, played cards, chatted with friends, and practiced their drama skills in preparation of the talent show. We have some very creative campers!

Off-season months brought the renovation of the main lodge at Camp Sunnyside which included air conditioning, making mealtimes much more comfortable!  The patio also received a makeover to include garage door style doors to keep rain out, a giant ceiling fan, and a heater for chilly times.

This marks the end of year 12 that the Iowa Educational Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired (IESBVI) have collaborated with Camp Sunnyside to provide support for the counselors working with the campers who are blind or visually impaired.  Carla Morrow, along with Phyllis (who retired last year), started the collaboration between Camp Sunnyside and IESBVI and she has been a consistent presence at Camp Sunnyside over the past 12 years. Carla has decided to retire from IESBVI later this fall and we hope that she continues to join us at camp.  The campers and staff love her and she has shared a wealth of knowledge with myself and other staff. Congratulations on your new adventures, Carla!
