Online Resources for Students with Additional Disabilities

Educational Neuroscience

  • Harvard's Center on the Developing Child - This site has some easy to understand information on the neuroscience of learning. The science of "serve and return" and healthy relationships have particular significance, since learning is grounded upon interactions with others.

Routines

  • Perkins School for the Blind has webcasts on topics for students with multiple impairments. Including a webcast by Millie Smith on "Strategies for Assessing and Teaching Students with Visual & Multiple Disabilities" to support use of the SLK (Sensory Learning Kit) Guidebook and Assessments.

  • Communication for Children with Deafblindness or Visual & Multiple Impairments is a site from Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (TSBVI) that includes examples and information on routines and several other instructional interventions for children with multiple disabilities.

Reading, Writing, and Math in Accessible, Meaningful Activities

  • Paths to Literacy is an AWESOME one stop shop for information on children with multiple disabilities, bookmark this one for sure folks and sign up for their newsletter!

  • Literacy for Children with Combined Hearing and Vision Loss includes the "Literacy Skills Checklist" to determine instructional reading level for pre-symbolic to independent symbolic communicators. Once complete use the "Steps to Literacy" resource to identify instructional interventions for the assessed reading level.

  • Remember, reading, writing, and math activities can, and often should, be routine based, have meaning the learner can connect to and need to be accessible (visually, auditorily, or tactilely). Meaningful communication (instructional language not chatter) should be embedded thoughtfully.

Active Leaning

  • Active Learning Space is THE one stop shop for all things active learning. It includes great examples of materials and equipment that can be used to promote the active exploration necessary for learning to occur. Data collection forms and the Five Phases of Active Learning should be considered when materials are developed.

  • Google/Pinterest search "activity boards" for toddlers/infants/Alzheimer's patients.

Interaction and Bonding

  • Child Guided Assessment  is a webinar by Dr. Jan van Dijk outlining his strategies to help develop healthy relationships with children who have extremely different life experiences thus compromising their ability and their desire to develop healthy relationships with the world beyond their bodies. Neuroscience confirms what every human being innately knows: trusting relationships are critical for learning. Dr. van Dijk helps us understand how to meet that need for children who are deafblind and multiply impaired who experience the world in different ways.

  • Overview of the van Dijk Curricular Approach includes information on "activities that encourage the learner to shift self-simulatory behaviors to behaviors that involve other persons and objects"  Resonance, co-active movement, and imitation strategies are educational strategies used to develop the trust a student neurologically needs to move beyond their own bodies.

  • Communication for Children with Deafblindness or Visual and Multiple Impairments  (TSBVI) includes a section on interaction and bonding with examples.

Calendars

  • Search above sites: Perkins/TSBVI/Paths to Literacy. It's important to remember, calendars are a tool used to help our students understand organize and participate in their own lives. We can also use that tool to promote communication, literacy (reading/writing) and math in a meaningful, student-driven context. Calendars should NOT be reduced solely to a tool we use to dictate what activities the student is being required to do.

Tip (or Fact) Sheets are a great resource to support the implementation and understanding of instructional strategies used to support students with visual and multiple disabilities. Nevada and California Deafblind Projects have provided helpful resources (some are available in Spanish).
