Why attend the Spring Family Conference?

To the parents and family members of a visually impaired child.

Why go to a conference?

Hi!  My name is Brook Nolin and I am the father of a 4 year old boy named Zachary who is blind.  We live in Spencer, Iowa and Zachary is the only blind child in the area.  I am writing this letter to encourage you to participate in the Spring Conference by the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School.  When Zachary was first born and diagnosed as being blind, our entire family felt like we were hit by a bus, shell-shocked, stunned, confused, lost, had no direction, and why us?

We went on the internet and got as much information as we could.  We found out more about his specific condition, but there was little information on how to raise a blind child.  We had countless questions that were unanswered.  We found out about a national conference in Omaha.  We attended – it was hard to go, we were fearful, we had trouble facing the reality of the challenges ahead for Zachary.

Since then we have attended several conferences put on by The Iowa Braille School.  What we have learned is that we are not alone, there are people that have experience that can help your child out.  We have met many great families that are in similar situations, all of them wanting to do whatever they can for their child. If your child has visual impairment with additional disabilities, you are not alone.   If you are the parent of an older child, please come and share your experiences of raising a blind child.  Please consider going to the spring conference, you will learn something that makes you child’s life better.   You will laugh, you might cry a little, you will meet some really interesting people.  Whenever I go to a conference I never know exactly what I will learn, but I know I will learn something that makes Zachary’s life better.

Thank You,

Brook Nolin
